If I Were King, March 2010 Edition

It wasn't too long ago that I heard about an 80 year old woman who went in to a Florida Department of Motor Vehicles office, renewed her drivers license, and promptly slammed her enormous Cadillac into a large tree at the edge of the parking lot. Inspectors on the scene said that she had to be going at least 50 mph to inflict that much damage to the car and to the tree. I repeat AT LEAST 50 MPH IN A SMALL PARKING LOT!

I've often maintained that driving, though ingrained into the American psyche, is a privilege and not a right. Part of that privilege is maintaining your skills and not being a threat to anyone else on the road.

So here's my March 2010 "If I were king" declaration:

If I were king, everyone one would have to take a full drivers test to renew their licence
at least once per decade. Oh, and the drivers have to carry the cost too.

This certainly wouldn't fix every problem driver out there. But it'd help all drivers to remember that driving is indeed a privilege and that they need to keep their skills sharp as well as stay up to date on the latest laws.

How many times have you encountered drivers at a four-way stop who have no idea how the rules of right-of-way work? Or how about those a--holes who still refuse to buckle in their kids? And what about driving in the rain? Do you know if your state requires you to turn on your headlights or not? That's important stuff and it shouldn't be allowed to slide!

That's my gripe for the month. Thank you for listening....
